Getting There & Getting Around
The main road through Connemara—the N59 highway up from Galway City to Clifden and Leenane (Leenaun)—is hardly a crowded superhighway, but you’ll still want to branch off from it to explore the region’s wild and rugged coast. Loops such as the R341 from Ballyhinch to Roundstone, the Sky Road from Clifden, or the Connemara Loop from Letterfrack reward travelers who have time to get off the beaten track. Regular buses run from Galway to Clifden; the route takes around half an hour longer than by car. Make sure you check the time of the last return journey—they tend to stop quite early in the evening.
Visitor Information -- The Clifden Tourist Office is on Galway Road, Clifden (095/21163). Its opening hours are a little unpredictable—generally every day from 9am to 5pm in summer, but you might find it closed on weekends in spring and fall, and it’s closed altogether from mid-October to mid-March.
