Thyme
Offering fine dining without being overly fussy or formal, this excellent bistro is one of the best places to eat in Athlone—or anywhere in the Midlands, come to that. Local ingredients feature heavily on the imaginative menu; to start, you may be offered young buck cheese mousse with candied walnuts, then maybe a loin of County Cork Wagyu beef with smoked potatoes, or cod with wild garlic aioli. The “value menu,” served until 6:30pm on Friday, 6pm Saturday, and all night the rest of the week, offers similar dishes at a very reasonable €25 for two courses, or €30 for three. Try to make reservations, especially on weekends.
