The inns and hotels of Dartmouth are expensive. The tourist office keeps a list of guesthouses providing affordable bed-and-breakfast. Our favorites include the Hill View House, 76 Victoria Rd., Dartmouth, Devon TQ6 9DZ (tel./fax 01803/839372; www.hillviewdartmouth.co.uk). The well-run guesthouse offers five stylishly furnished, midsize bedrooms, each with a bathroom containing a tub or shower. The five-story restored late-Victorian house lies near the town center and waterfront. Charges range from £57 to £70 for a double, with breakfast included. Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted.

Another good choice is a small family-run guesthouse, Capritia, 69 Victoria Rd., Dartmouth, Devon TQ6 9RX (tel. 01803/833419; www.capritia.co.uk), offering four small to midsize, but comfortably furnished, bedrooms ranging from £60 to £70 (no credit cards) for a double, including breakfast. Rooms have a TV, small fridge, hair dryer, and Wi-Fi.

A final possibility is Cladda, 90 Victoria Rd. (tel. 01803/835957; fax 01803/835803; www.cladda-guesthouse.co.uk), a 1km (half-mile) walk from the center. There are six units, including two suites. Rates, which include a full English breakfast, are £70 for a double, and from £125 for a suite. Suites are in a building next to the main house; each comes with a lounge and kitchen. All accommodations have a TV, fridge, hair dryer, and Wi-Fi. American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted.
