Casa Solana
New in 2014 and custom-built on the side of steep hill 10 minutes outside of Zihuatanejo proper, this chill little B&B has a lot going for it. Everything in it has been chosen with care, from the locally made bamboo furniture to lamps fashioned from Oaxacan pots to the traditional Patzcuaro bedspreads and the Sealy mattresseses beneath (much softer and cushier than you get in many Zihuatanejo hotels). Room are curvaceous, with pasta walls (like stucco but smooth to the touch) and hammock-slung verandahs in all but he cheaper garden-view rooms. The hotel also boasts a small infinity pool, an honor bar, a little library stocked with paperbacks and games, and a kitchen. Breakfast is included but the gracious owners will often whip up a meal at any time of the day if guests request it. The only downside to staying here is the location, which isn’t central (to put it mildly): It’s a 15-minute walk to the Los Gatos beach below, and you’ll need to drive into town, although most guests get around by taxi. Still, this is an unusually friendly little place and being so new, it’s still spiffy. Tip: To get the word out about the B&B, the owners offer discounts, so ask if you don’t see one listed on the website.
