Elwood’s Shack

A Memphis institution despite the fact it’s been around less than a decade, Elwood’s Shack serves simple, impeccably executed comfort food that comes from exactly where you think it does: a shotgun-style shack. Located in a Lowe’s parking lot right off Memphis’ secret best food street—Summer Avenue—here you’ll find huge, satisfying biscuits that will run you less than $4, as well as breakfast burritos, burgers, and pimento cheese. Locals fell hard for this place quickly, thanks in part to the casual atmosphere defined by deer antlers and sports memorabilia. The brisket takes 3 days to make, and you can taste every bit of those 72 hours, especially when it’s topped off with their signature barbecue sauce made from molasses, maple syrup, and Old Charter 8 bourbon. The delightfully random menu also features spot-on pizza and the crowd-pleasing Elwood’s Shaq Attack: a showcase of ribs, brisket, wings, pulled pork, and half a chicken, along with Texas toast, potato salad, and green and purple cabbage slaw. But be warned: They serve upwards of 800 people on weekends, so there’s often a wait, which you can circumvent with a simple call-in order. You may also find shorter lines at their second location at 4040 Park Ave.
