The Bar-B-Que Shop

If you’ve never eaten barbecue spaghetti, start here. But be warned: Barbecue spaghetti is a little sweet due to the sauce, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It is worth trying, though, and the Bar-B-Que shop does it better than anybody else. The original restaurant that stood here, Brady & Lil’s, is said to be originator of that wholly local dish of noodles simmered in sauce and pork trimmings. Bar-B-Que Shop ribs are also tops in town with a deep smoke flavor that permeates the meat. Andrew Zimmern named the Bar-B-Que Shop’s pulled pork sandwich the best in town; it’s always a solid choice, and it’s served on grilled Texas toast, a departure from the presentation at most Memphis restaurants. That departure from the norm into Texas territory extends to their pulled or chopped beef, rib tips, and beef brisket, all of which are rare in Memphis but are delicious, as is the barbecue bologna. Texturally, bologna can trip some people up, but often I find those same people like hot dogs, and the two are not that far apart.
