Gibson’s Donuts
This old-fashioned, family-owned bakery is a Memphis institution, with diehards routinely waiting for fresh batches of fried dough to come out late at night. Owner Don DeWeese credits his triple-rise process for making his doughnuts special, and the food world has taken notice, with Gibson’s routinely being called out on lists and by food celebrities the likes of Alton Brown. The glass display cases show off plump crullers, cream horns, apple fritters, and trendier donuts such as maple bacon. All types of round donuts—glazed, yeast, blueberry, cake, and jelly-filled—are up for grabs, and every Memphian has their favorite (I am ride-or-die chocolate-iced with sprinkles or blueberry depending on my mood.). A few booths seat eager patrons who need their fix immediately but don’t want to get glaze all over their cars, though Gibson’s will gladly package you up a fresh dozen (or two) for takeout. Tip: If DeWeese starts talking to you while you’re in line, be sure to tell him it’s your first time in—and put your hands up for sweet little freebie.
