The Commissary
In the early 1900s, commissaries were staples of Southern life, selling everything from blue jeans to milk. The original Germantown Commissary housed a small country store for more than 90 years, until its rebirth as this barbecue restaurant in 1981; it’s been a Germantown staple ever since. They serve tasty pulled pork sandwiches and ribs, as well as Brunswick stew and salads piled high with meat for those of us who like to pretend to diet at a barbecue joint. Their potato salad is polarizing, but I love it: It’s more akin to a chilled twice baked potato with cheese and sour cream mixed in, and it is a glorious salty and savory side. The barbecue nachos are also good here, and they should be: Experts actually trace the invention of barbecue nachos back to the Germantown Commissary kitchen. For dessert, banana pudding is a must with thick, flavorful pudding, big slices of banana, and a hint of vanilla topped with light, airy whipped cream. This place has served all kinds of stars swinging through town—Faith Hill, The Eagles, and Jack Nicklaus—so if you’re out east looking for a crowd-pleaser, this is it.
