Uncle Lou’s Fried Chicken
Uncle Lou’s is the real deal: a locally owned eatery that has been serving up mouthwatering fried chicken since 2001 alongside local favorites such as fried bologna sandwiches. Located just a few minutes from Graceland, it’s a worthwhile side trip for anyone making a pilgrimage to see the King. The recipe comes from Lou’s great-grandmother, Rosie Gillespie of Nesbit, Mississippi. The honey hot-sauced version is a nice departure from the classic, but the crisp-skinned, lightly salted original is pretty much perfect. Moist and flavorful, the chicken is every bit as good as Gus’s (p. ###) but doesn’t get as much glory. The creamy, rich potato salad and fried okra are excellent. Uncle Lou’s is a tidy, efficiently run restaurant where you place your order at the counter and eat at booths or small tables. A map of the USA along one wall is studded with colorful pushpins and photos of satisfied customers from all over the country.
