All of Fiji's major international and local car-rental firms have offices in the international arrival concourse of Nadi International Airport.

Westside Motorbike Rentals (tel. 672 6402; www.motorbikerentalsfiji.com) in Namaka, Martintar, Denarau Island, and Sigatoka rents scooters for F$79 (US$51/£26) including helmets and third-party insurance. However, in my opinion, riding scooters in Fiji is not for novices.

Taxis gather outside the arrival concourse at the airport and are stationed at the larger hotels. Ask the reception desk to call one, or contact Taxi 2000 (tel. 672 1350), one of the more reliable companies whose cabs are radio dispatched. The aggressive drivers will find you in Nadi Town.

I often take the local buses that ply the Queen's Road between the markets in Nadi Town and Lautoka frequently during daylight, every 30 minutes after dark. Tell the driver where you're going; he'll tell you how much to pay when you board. Fares vary according to the length of the trip. No more than F65¢ (US42¢/22p) will take you anywhere between the airport and Nadi Town.

Westbus (tel. 672 2917) links the Nadi Town market to Denarau Island, where you can catch the free Bula Bus shuttle around the island from 7am to 11pm daily.
