The following facts apply specifically to Nadi and Lautoka.

Bookstores -- The best bookstore is in the departures area of Nadi International Airport; it's open 24/7. Hotel boutiques are also good places to buy magazines and books. Bookshops in town are actually stationery stores.

Camera & Film -- Caines Photofast (tel. 670 1608) has a film and 1-hour processing shop on Queen's Road in Nadi Town, and you can also download and print your digital photos there. Most of the hotel gift shops also sell film.

Currency Exchange -- ANZ Bank, Westpac Bank, and Colonial National Bank have offices with cash machines in Namaka and on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town. ANZ and Westpac have ATMs at the Port Denarau marina on Denarau Island, and ANZ's airport office is open 24 hours a day. You'll get a better rate for currency and traveler's checks at the GlobalEX offices at the airport and on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town.

Drugstores -- There are drugstores on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town, but Budget Pharmacy (tel. 670 0064) is the most well-stocked. It has a branch in Namaka (tel. 672 2533), and it operates Denarau Pharmacy (tel. 675 0780) in the Port Denarau complex.

Emergencies & Police -- The emergency phone number for police is tel. 917. Dial tel. 911 for fire and ambulance. The Fiji police have stations at Nadi Town (tel. 670 0222) and at the airport terminal (tel. 672 2222).

Eyeglasses -- For optical needs, try Eyesite, on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town (tel. 670 7178).

Healthcare -- The government-operated Lautoka Hospital (tel. 666 3337) is the region's main facility. There is a government medical clinic (tel. 670 0362) in Nadi Town. Dr. Ram Raju, 2 Lodhia St., Nadi Town (tel. 670 0240 or 976333 mobile), has treated many visitors, including me. The private Namaka Medical Center (tel. 672 2228) is open 24 hours a day and has doctors on call. Ask your hotel staff to recommend a dentist in private practice.

Internet Access -- All hotels and hostels have computers for their guests to access the Internet. Internet kiosks are in the Nadi Airport terminal, and several cybercafes are on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town. On Denarau Island, the Esquires (tel. 675 0989), in front of the Sheraton Denarau Villas, has free wireless access for its customers. Fiji's major provider, Connect Internet Services (tel. 670 7359) has an office in Namaka where you can sign up for temporary dial-up access.

Laundry & Dry Cleaning -- Flagstaff Laundry & Dry Cleaning (tel. 672 2161), on Northern Press Road in Martintar, has 1-day laundry and dry-cleaning service.

Mail -- The Nadi Town post office, on Hospital Road near the south end of the market, is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to noon. It has a well-stocked stationery store in the lobby. A small airport branch is across the main entry road from the terminal (go through the gates and turn left). It is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to noon.

Visitor Information -- You can get brochures and other information from the tour companies in the arrivals concourse at Nadi Airport. Other so-called Tourist Information Centres are really travel agents or tour operators.

Water -- The tap water is safe to drink.
