Palamidi

The mightiest of the three fortresses that defend Nafplion is Venetian, completed in 1714 and surrounded by massive walls and eight bastions. So secure were the Venetians with these defenses that upon completing the Palamidi they left only 80 soldiers in Nafplion; the Turks easily seized the fortress just one year later. Greek rebels then took the fortress from the Turks during the War of Independence in 1821. Prisoners unfortunate enough to be confined in the Palamidi dungeons over the centuries were forced to cut the 999 steps that climb the cliff face from the town below.
