Bjork

If the only Swedish meatballs you ever tasted were the rubbery ones at Ikea, you owe it to yourself to come to Bjork. At the lobby restaurant of the Scandinavia House cultural center, these little orbs are more tender than the smiles Swedish mormors (grandmothers) give their grandchildren, and they’re sided by a nicely tangy ligonberry jam, and mashed potatoes—a hearty meal for just $16. Bjork also has smorrebrod (open faced sandwiches) starting at $9, herring plates, potato waffles with all sorts of sexy toppings (gravlax, roe, cold water shrimp and more), open-faced sandwiches (pictured above) and a number of other Nordic specialties, all expertly cooked and fairly priced. Finish your meal with a caramel cookie. Why not? It’s only $2. Note: On days that the Scandinavia House has an evening event you may need a reservation to dine here, so do check the calendar before heading over (usually you can just walk in).
