Monkey Bar
The Jazz Age springs to life at this iconic bar/restaurant in the Elysees Hotel (). You may recognize the Monkey Bar’s many murals from cocktail-swilling scenes in both Mad Men and Sex in the City; the glamor of this joint is undimmed since the filming of those two series, meaning this is one of the top “special occasion” restaurants in the city (if you don’t witness a proposal here you need new glasses). In 2022, new management took over the food and drink service, which has brought back the crowds, but I’ve found the comestibles to be hit or miss. Some dishes, like the Crab Rangoon appetizer and the lemon meringue pie, are tasty throwbacks, but many straightforward options like the double cheeseburger and the spiced fried chicken, are unmemorable. My advice: get something from the less expensive end of the menu—entrees range from $28 to $125!—and revel in the ambiance.
