The Uyghurs are an ethnic group who live in the western provinces of China, and have very distinctive culinary traditions, ones that borrow from both Han Chinese cooking and the “Stans” of Central Asia. So diners here down cumin-scented stirfries atop toothsome hand pulled noodles, alongside plates of kebabs with pilaf. Since almost all Uyghers are Muslim, no pork is served. Instead, wonderfully flavorful, tender lamb is the centerpiece of many dishes. Tenghri Tang is a very simple, counter service joint, but it’s one of the best places to eat in the vicinity of Macy’s and the Empire State Building, as the cooks put great care into their cooking, and once your food is ready they will bring it to your table with a smile.
