Konzelmann Estate Winery

When fourth-generation German winemaker Herbert Konzelmann was looking to buy property in Niagara (his family has a well-established winery near the small German town of Uhlbach), he knew he wanted a waterfront winery. Lake Ontario creates a microclimate that extends the growing period well into autumn, allowing Konzelmann to grow a diverse selection of grapes (it has over 30 wines on offer at any one time, but the German-inspired bottles are the best). The wines produced at Niagara’s only lakeshore winery have received dozens of international accolades. The winery’s Vidal Icewine was the first Canadian wine to earn a prestigious spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list. Don’t try the peach wine, though; it tastes of gimmicks and penicillin.
