Note that all-inclusive resorts, where guests prepay one price for all lodgings, meals, entertainment, and often drinks would fall into the Expensive or Very Expensive categories. Also, many properties, such as Beaches and Sandals, can be reached via toll-free numbers.

More and more discerning travelers to Ocho Rios are renting private villas such as the Cottage at Te Moana (tel. 876/974-2870; www.harmonyhall.com), lying a half-hour drive east of Ocho Rios and inland from the little town of Oracabessa. The seaside bungalow is owned by Peter and Annabella Proudlock, who also run the Harmony Hall Art Gallery. Their rental contains an outdoor shower, a hammock-lined veranda, a loft-style bedroom, and a full kitchen, costing $110 in off season or $130 in winter.

All-Inclusive Resorts

More so than any resort in Jamaica, Ocho Rios is now firmly in the all-inclusive resort camp. Many of the older and more established inns have been swallowed up by the Sandals umbrella, reborn as all-inclusives with names like "Beaches."

Not for independent or frugal types, these all-inclusives -- where things can feel scheduled and formulaic -- are nevertheless the best, most luxurious lodgings at Ocho Rios (with an exception or two). Most are quite expensive as a result. The following resorts all include your room, drinks, and meals, plus often many activities, in the price. Seek detailed clarification of what's included when booking.
