Palacio Guendulain
You can pretend you were born to nobility when you stay at this plush boutique hotel carved out of the 18th-century family home built by the viceroy of northern South America, Sebastián de Eslava. His descendants still live on the first floor, but the ground level has become the hotel reception area and restaurant, while the second and third floors are given over to sumptuously appointed guest rooms decorated mainly with antique-style furnishings and a smattering of real antiques. The family’s collection of fancy carriages is on display, and the polished dark woodwork and gilt-edged furniture can make the hotel sometimes feel like a museum. Nonetheless, it is easy to get used to living in this style, especially since the “classic” rooms are modestly priced. (There are more expensive deluxe rooms and two suites.)
