Pemberton and nearby Manjimup have been major timber towns and still have operating mills -- though at much reduced capacity. The surrounding countryside is a mosaic of forest (mostly karri), pasture, orchards and vineyards, crisscrossed by numerous south-flowing rivers, many with wild trout. Pemberton has been slowly changing its focus, and now has appealing hideaways, modern wineries producing high-quality wines, olive and cherry orchards, tours to the nearby South Coast, glorious forest drives, and a rattling good ride along an old timber railway. Truffles are the new black gold in Pemberton -- and they're being produced in ever-increasing quantity and quality.
