El Conquistador Hotel

Built centuries ago as a private villa, this hotel -- one of the most attractive in town -- has been tastefully renovated. It sits opposite an unused back entrance to the Mezquita and has triple rows of stone-trimmed windows and ornate iron balustrades. The marble-and-granite lobby opens onto an interior courtyard filled with seasonal flowers, a pair of splashing fountains, and a symmetrical stone arcade. The quality and comfort of the rooms -- each with a black-and-white marble floor and a private bathroom -- earn the hotel four government-granted stars. But for us, the rooms are too small.
