The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, 300 Tower Rd. (tel. 239/417-6310; www.rookerybay.org), operates boat trips out of the now-closed Briggs Nature Center, on Shell Island Road, off Fla. 951 between U.S. 41 and Marco Island. Join a Rookery Bay naturalist for a 2-hour guided exploration of the bays and mangrove forests of Rookery Bay. Discover the unique plants and animals that make this coastal ecosystem so valuable. Tours are offered Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. The trip is limited to 10 participants ages 12 and up. Cost is $35.
