This small but lovely museum is devoted to presenting 19th- and 20th-century African-American art as well as 20th-century African and Caribbean art and traditional African art and artifacts. Rotating exhibitions are a big part of the museum's focus, such as "Smithsonian African-American Photography: The First 100 Years, 1842-1942"; the silk-screens and lithographs of Jacob Lawrence; and an annual exhibition of works by emerging artists as part of its Artists-in-Residence program. In 2007, the museum featured "Africa Comics," the first exhibition of African comic art in the U.S. There's also a small sculpture garden, a good gift shop, and a full calendar of special events.
