Studio Museum in Harlem

This small but lovely museum is devoted to presenting 19th- and 20th-century African-American art, as well as 20th-century African and Caribbean art and traditional African art and artifacts. Rotating exhibitions are a big part of the museum’s focus, such as "Smithsonian African-American Photography: The First 100 Years, 1842–1942"; an installation by the artist Shinique Smith as part of its ongoing “Project Space” program; and an annual exhibition of works by emerging artists as part of its Artists-in-Residence program. Through March 2010, the museum featured a survey of contemporary art dealing with body and race in an exhibition titled, “30 Seconds off an Inch.” There’s also a small sculpture garden, a good gift shop, and a full calendar of special events.
