The first new NYC hotel to open in 2007, Hotel Mela adds to the hotel-heavy presence on West 44th St. Compared to the Millenium Broadway across the street, the 230-room Hotel Mela seems miniscule. Advertised as a "luxury boutique" property, the hotel was converted from an office building and that sleek, contemporary spirit, despite a few antique touches in design, prevails. The hotel has a more corporate feel to it, but with a central location; close to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and the rest of midtown makes it an ideal spot for the leisure traveler as well. Rooms, though a bit on the small side, are well equipped with comfortable beds, kings or queens, Egyptian combed cotton linen sheets, 310-count duvet covers, LCD TVs, and free wireless Internet. The bathrooms make the most of space with plenty of shelf room. The Asian-inspired hotel's restaurant, Saju, offers 24-hour room service. Service is personable making the Hotel Mela a good, solid addition to those who seek something a bit more intimate in hectic Times Square.
