Ubeda is hailed as "the crafts capital of Andalusia" and many visitors come here just to shop. Walk its ancient streets and you'll come upon shop after shop where artisans sell stained glass, stone carvings, woven baskets, wrought iron, and more.
Pottery is king, however, and Calle Valencia is known as "pottery row." The town's legendary pottery was by Pablo Tito, whose works are highly valued collector's items today. He left his trade secrets to his offspring, who still carry on in his tradition.
Friendly, outgoing Juan Tito is behind the potter's wheel at Plaza del Ayuntamiento 12 daily from 9am to 2pm and 4 to 8pm (tel. 95-375-13-02). His display of ceramics is most impressive. Another son, Paco Tito, Calle Valencia 22 (tel. 95-375-14-96), will also try to lure you to his lair daily from 9am to 2pm and 4 to 8pm. His specialty is making clay sculptures based on characters from Don Quixote. Yet a third potter drawing upon the Tito legend is Melchor Tito, whose studio is open daily from 9am to 2pm and 4 to 8pm at Calle Valencia 44 (tel. 95-375-33-65). He was actually the son-in-law of the fabulous Pablo and specializes in a stunning green glaze pottery. Another specialist in the green glaze pottery identified with Ubeda is Antonio Almazara, Calle Valencia 34 (tel. 95-375-12-00). He's available daily form 9am to 2pm and 4 to 9pm.
