More than likely your hotel will have a choice of guided excursions in and around Savusavu. If not, Trip n Tour, in the Copra Shed (tel. 885 3154; tripntours@connect.com.fj), has a series of tours and excursions. One goes in search of the red prawns that grow in lakes on southeastern Vanua Levu (F$55/US$36/£18 per person). Another takes you to a copra and beef plantation, where you can see the modern-day version of the old South Seas coconut plantation. It costs F$35 (US$23/£12) per person. A full-day trip goes to Waisali Rainforest Reserve, a 116-hectare (290-acre) national forest up in the central mountains; the outing, which includes a hike to a waterfall, costs F$125 (US$81/£42). The park has well-maintained gravel pathways. Reservations for the tour are essential.

Rock 'n Downunder Divers, on the main street (tel. 885 3054; rockndownunder@connect.com.fj), has half-day Fijian village visits for F$60 (US$39/£20). It also offers half- and full-day boat tours around Savusavu Bay for F$70 (US$45/£23) and F$120 (US$78/£40), respectively, and full-day cruises up a river on the bay's north shore for F$80 (US$52/£27).
