Once called Spain's "second city," Barcelona no longer deserves that appellation. Long suppressed by the dominance of Madrid, Barcelona has truly found its own personality. Barcelona, like Milan, is both industrious and pleasure-seeking, serious but playful, and image conscious without losing its inherent grittiness. Warlords, kings, and dictators have all tried to mold the city to suit their interests, but Barcelona is nothing if not resilient, re-inventing itself time and time again and refusing to renounce its culture, language, and identity. Today, with a booming economy and arts scene, plus a citizen-friendly local government, Barcelona seems to epitomize modern Europe and continues to seduce with its special charms.
