Frequented by locals and travelers on a budget, Romesco is never going to win any Michelin stars, but it does offer up the sort of homemade food that is rapidly disappearing within the immediate vicinity of touristy La Rambla. The lighting is bright, the tables are laminated, and the waiters and food are no-nonsense and generously proportioned. At the top end, you have a hunk of freshly grilled tuna served with a simple salad, at the bottom arroz a la cubana (a hangover cure consisting of white rice, tomato sauce, a fried egg, and a fried banana -- it's actually very good). Desserts include a creamy crema catalana (crème brûlée) or a rice pudding. Finishing it all off with a strong coffee certainly does the trick.
