Mató is Catalan for cottage cheese -- in this case prepared by the nuns at the Monastery of Pedralbes, which is just round the corner from this homey eating spot. Located in an old house with various dining areas in this relaxing residential corner of the city, it's high above the fumes and the hubbub of traffic. Indeed, El Mató is ideal for a relaxing, traditional-style lunch. Sample Catalan dishes range form the reliable old standby truite de patata i cebra (Spanish omelet with potatoes and onions) to the more unique escudella barejada (broth with chunks of veal) and escargols a la llauna (snails in oil, thyme, and garlic sauce). An indoor terrace offers fine views. The service is friendly and attentive.
