Named after the Spanish king who attended its opening and has visited it several times since, this five-star competes effectively with other legendary top-notch hostelries such as El Palace, Claris, and Hotel Arts. Opened in time for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, it rises 17 stories at the northern end of the Diagonal in a wealthy neighborhood filled with corporate headquarters, banks, and upscale stores.
