Hotel Axel ReviewLocated in a fine moderniste building in a zone known as "Gaixample," this boutique hotel has widened its original single-sex net to embrace heteros and gays alike. The staff is hip, and amenities range from a cool, scarlet-colored cocktail bar and restaurant in the lobby to a trendy rooftop pool, bar, sauna, and sundeck. For dress-conscious visitors there's a men's designer clothing store next door (run by the Axel). All bedrooms have soundproofed windows, king-size beds covered with large soft pillows, a subtly erotic decor, and smart en-suite bathrooms -- designed for two -- some with Jacuzzis. An extra touch is the provision of free bottled mineral water in fridges on every floor. There are also a few rooms for visitors with disabilities. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
