Frommer's Review
Tucked away on a narrow street in the heart of Santa Cruz, the Residencia Murillo (named after the artist who used to live in this district) is very close to the gardens of the Alcázar. Inside, the lounges harbor some fine architectural characteristics and antique reproductions; behind a grilled screen is a retreat for drinks. Many of the rooms we inspected were cheerless and gloomy, so have a look before checking in. All contain bathrooms with tub/shower combos. You can reach this residencia from the Menéndez y Pelayo, a wide avenue west of the Parque María Luisa, where a sign leads you through the Murillo Gardens on the left. Those arriving by car should try to park in the Plaza de Santa Cruz. Then walk 2 blocks to the hotel, which will send a bellhop back to the car to pick up your suitcases. If there are two in your party, station a guard at the car, and if you're going out at night, call for an inexpensive taxi to take you instead of strolling through the streets of the Old Quarter -- it's less romantic but a lot safer.
