A converted mansion in the Barrio Santa Cruz has been turned into a rendezvous that's been compared to "a living room in a luxurious movie set." In the heart of the Jewish ghetto, this 19th-century house, constructed around a central courtyard with a fountain, evokes the Spanish Romantic era. Drinks and low-key conversations are the style here, and since its opening in 1980, all the visiting literati and glitterati have put in an appearance. Young men and women in jeans also patronize the place, enjoying the comfort of the sofas and wicker armchairs.

The ingredients of a special drink called aqua de Sevilla are a secret, but we suspect sparkling white wine, pineapple juice, and eggs (the whites and yolks mixed in separately so that the whites achieve a meringue-like consistency). Classical music is played in the background. Take a taxi to get here at night, as it might not be safe to wander late along the narrow streets of the barrio. In summer it's open daily 8pm to 4am, in winter daily 8pm to 2:30am.
