The main allure in Aigues-Mortes is the town itself. The Middle Ages still permeates virtually every building, rampart, and cobble-stoned street, and the town is still enclosed by ramparts that were constructed between 1272 and 1300. The Tour de Constance (www.aigues-mortes-monument.fr; tel. 04-66-53-61-55), is a model castle of the Middle Ages. Take the lift to the top for panoramic view of the marshes. Admission is 8€ for adults, 4.50€ for visitors 18 to 25, and free for children 17 and under. The monument is open May to August daily 10am to 7pm, and September to April daily 10am to 5:30pm.

The city’s religious centerpiece is the Eglise Notre-Dame des Sablons, rue Jean-Jaurès. Constructed of wood in 1183, it was rebuilt in stone in 1246 in the ogival style. The church is open May to September daily 8:30am to 6pm, and October to April daily 10am to 5pm.

The waterways and wetlands of the Petite Camargue can be explored in many ways: You can join a jeep safari, canoe, kayak, cycle, ride on a paddle steamer, or just put your hiking boots on and wander along the trails that are inaccessible by car. Your reward is the sight of flocks of flamingoes and other birdlife, white Camargue horses, and herds of Camargue bulls. Just make sure to cover yourself with plenty of mosquito repellent.
