Shacked up in a remote rented cottage in these abandoned ochre sandstone quarries, Cézanne painted what are widely recognized as some of the first Cubist artworks. Among the 11 oil paintings and 16 watercolors (1895-1904) he created here, natural geometric shapes—as well as a scattering of pine trees and Cézanne’s beloved Mont Sainte-Victoire—feature heavily. Carrières de Bibémus are now owned by the Aix municipality, and have been lightly landscaped to highlight Cézanne’s time here. Note that the area may be visited by guided tour only (around 1 hour). Visitors with limited mobility will find the tour challenging. A shuttle (1€ each way) runs to the Carrières directly from the parking lot 3 Bons Dieux. Arrive 45 minutes before the tour.
