Name droppers and history buffs love this place. Among those who have stayed here: Ulysses S. Grant, Henry Ford, Laurel & Hardy, Mary Pickford, José Martí, The Carnegies, and the Rockefellers. And while no Kardashians have yet to lay their heiry heads here, Florida House Inn, the state’s oldest-operating hotel, is a charming throwback to simpler times. Each of the 17 rooms and suites offer varying color schemes and antiques but also have the modern comforts of flatscreen TVs and Wi-Fi. Enjoy fried chicken and champagne in Leddy’s, the inn’s dining room, serving lunch and dinner, followed by a thoroughly modern cocktail (cucumber, lime juice, jalapeño, and tequila, anyone?) at The Mermaid Bar located on the downstairs level. If a few of those don’t leave you spinning, consider rocking away on the two gingerbread-trimmed front verandas or on a back porch overlooking a brick courtyard shaded by a huge oak tree just like they did in the good ol’ days. Note: Children 13 and under are allowed “at the proprietor’s discretion,” but I’ll save you the sizing up and say that this is not a place for kids at all.
