Just a few steps east of the Napasai, the Santiburi was the first high-end property in the area but has remained fresh and current thanks to several makeovers. The latest renovation added 19 sprawling pool villas surrounded by private gardens. State-of-the-art amenities, like the well-appointed spa, are discreetly infused into the contemporary Thai architecture. The resort’s top villas front the beach, while the others are set among lush greenery around a central pool and spa. Each bungalow comes with a large sunken tub. Guests can take advantage of windsurfing and sailing (free), and there is a sailing junk to tour surrounding islands (it’s also used for supper cruises). Santiburi also hosts the island’s top golf course, Santiburi Golf, near the resort.

Santiburi has a slightly more affordable companion in nearby Bophut, called the Bophut Resort and Spa (www.bophutresort.com; tel. 07724-5777), at a similar high standard, with 61 luxury seaside villas. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels, and rates start at 5,500B.
