In nearly every way, it plays the part of the curious abode of an eccentric “wicked uncle” who collects oddities and likes to drink—each room has its own eclectic character of rich and heavy antique mismatched furniture, hand-hung wallpaper, vintage glass photographic slides embedded in bathroom walls, and expensive punchbowl-set glassware. Yet the essence of this spot near Hyde Park and Oxford Street is vigorous, down to strong showers. Downstairs, the dusky, parlor-style lounge bar (the Parlour) keeps pouring coffees and well-made cocktails deep into the night. This feels like a hotel in Oscar Wilde drag, and it’s winkingly Londonish to a deliciously quirky extreme. There’s another location in Clerkenwell and one announced for Bloomsbury for 2025. Tip: The Studio Suite has a four-poster that could rival the Great Bed of Ware in the V&A, but the basement room has the least charm.
