This Wailea resort restaurant doesn’t have the chic intimacy of its cousin, Mala Ocean Tavern in Lahaina but it’s still a delicious destination with a nearly identical menu. Beloved chef and restaurateur Mark Ellman knows how to craft locally sourced dishes that are both health-conscious and full of flavor. (One of the pioneers of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, he also owns Migrant and Honu, and launched the “Practice Aloha” movement.) Specials include the wonderful fried Tamashiro tofu with coconut peanut sauce and Thai basil, and a perfectly moist panko-crusted snapper with Molokai sweet potato mash. There’s an entire menu of gluten-free and vegan items. If that doesn’t apply to you, I highly recommend the insanely rich mac and cheese. For breakfast, indulge in the sumptuous buffet or order from an a la carte menu. Don’t miss the killer French toast drizzled with house-made caramel sauce and tropical fruit—it’s the breakfast version of Ellman’s legendary Caramel Miranda dessert.
