Hostal Nicolas de Ovando Santo Domingo ReviewIn the eyes of nationalists, no other hotel in Santo Domingo elicits such a sense of civic pride. In the heart of the colonial old town, next to the Alcázar de Colón, where Diego, son of Columbus, lived, it originated in 1502 as a private mansion. Between 1999 and 2002, its thick masonry walls, hand-hewn ceiling beams, and a quartet of rhythmically graceful inner courtyards were restored, and the premises were massively enlarged with the construction, immediately next door, of a wing that was built to emulate the design of the original core. For historians seeking a security-conscious location within the capital's historic core, this is a good choice. However, to some, the place evokes a stiff and somewhat uncomfortable historic monument that never made a graceful transition into a hotel. Bedrooms seem underfurnished, with just the hint that they were designed by a government-funded museum board. And the staff here seems programmed like government-grade bureaucrats instead of workers in the hospitality industry. There are, however, areas of great charm, especially in its colonial courtyards, where bar service is available, and its restaurant, where the food is superb. The most expensive accommodations are the suites (actually just very large, high-ceilinged rooms) within the monument's original antique core. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
