Minsheng Art Museum is located inside the park-like atmosphere of Red Town at the edge of the Changning district. Supported by Minsheng Bank, the museum opened in 2010 with the goal of promoting China's contemporary art from the past three decades, and hosts regular exhibitions inside its five-room, cement-floored space, usually organized around a theme or region. Recent exhibitions include the paintings of and video documentaries starring painter Liu Xiaodong, and the work of Harbin oil painter Qiu Xiaofei. In early 2014, the museum curated a video exhibition from the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art; check the website frequently, as exhibitions rotate as quickly as every 10 days. It curates its own exhibits and also hosts traveling exhibitions. It also has an education and research component aimed at promoting art and art appreciation to the public. The museum is worth a quick tour, then head outside to the Red Town park, which is one of the few spaces in Shanghai where you can sit on the grass.
