Green Goddess is a bit off-the-beaten path for Stowe visitors, being nowhere near the mountain and a short drive from the white-steepled main drag of the town. But those who find it, find their way back, because this unprepossesing place (you order at the counter and carry your own dish to a table) serves what has to be the finest breakfast in Stowe. Crafted from made-down-the-road Vermont ingredients, like newly lain eggs, knife sharp cheddar and all sorts of fresh fruits and veggies (the restaurant is a proud member of the Vermont Fresh Network, an alliance of farmers and chefs) the food is cooked with care and a dash of creativity. One morning you might find yourself marveling at the tangy mixture of eggs benedict with olive tapenade; and on another chowing down on banana bread french toast, sided by outrageous candied bacon. Lunches are as good, ranging from mix-your-own salads (with lots of unusual options) to a vast array of sandwiches (I'm particularly enamored of the chicken curry sammy with mango chutney and almonds). Soups, chiles and mac n' cheese round out the options. Alas, the Green Goddess is not open for dinner.
