Honeymoon!!!! Just can't figure out which island to pick

by QT »

Hi All,

We're going to Hawaii for the first time for our honeymoon in March which I thought would be an easy thing to plan, but now I'm finding that each island is quite different from the next. What we want is the classic Hawaiian experience: great beaches, good snorkeling, maybe a luau, maybe some other kind of adventure (hiking, visiting a volcano). I'm 24 and my fiancee is 30. This will be our first time leaving the mainland USA.

THANK YOU!

March will be the tail end of whale season, the best island in many people's opinion is Maui.

However the only currently active volcano is Kileaua on the Big Island (Island of Hawaii) which has recently had flowing lava after almost a two year period of little activity. You can also drive up to Haleakala on Maui which is dormant. How long do you have for your trip? You will need a rental car on Maui, Big Island or Kauai and anywhere outside of Waikiki on Oahu.

Sorry, I just saw this and it's very helpful. We have 10 days including the days of our flights. Would we be able to see both islands in that time? Seeing lava flowing sounds amazing.

Sorry, not sure which two islands you mean. With 10 days you could do two of the three smaller islands, Oahu, Maui, or Kauai. For the Big Island, you really need a minimum of seven days just because it is so big with maybe 2/3 nights in Hilo or Volcano and the rest on the Kohala Coast.

We're now thinking Maui and the Big Island. We don't have to see all of both. I just would love to have a real beach vacation and also see the lava flow. Would those two make sense for that?
