Apart from the eateries reviewed here, the restaurants at Quality Kings Hotel and Hotel Ashley also serve good meals. Both veer toward the more formal - or as formal as things get on the West Coast. For good coffee, Internet, and adventure atmosphere, try dp: one café, 108 Mawhera Quay (tel. 03/768-4005), which is my pick for the best relaxed cafe environment. If you prefer a less-funky interior, you'll be happier at Café 124 on Mackay, 124 Mackay St. (tel. 03/768-7503), which has reasonable all-day food, but the service is patchy at best. Jones's Café & Bar, 37 Tainui St. (tel. 03/768-6468), is another nice coffee spot with an all-day blackboard menu. For evening and lunchtime dining, The Coalface, opposite Greymouth i-SITE, at Mackay and Boundary streets (tel. 03/768-9223), is the town's newest addition. It has a separate bar, and a very good stone-grill menu. Trawlers Seafood Restaurant, 14-16 Tarapuhi St. (tel. 03/768-9254), has the smartest restaurant interior and good meals, but the service is often hopeless. I'll say it again: Don't expect dining miracles on the West Coast. For pizza try Friar Tuck Pizza, 1 Marsden St. (tel. 03/768-066), or Bonzai Pizzeria, 31 Mackay St. (tel. 03/768-4170).
