Revelstoke is surrounded by rugged mountains with extremely heavy snowfalls (almost 18m/59 ft. annually). The town is particularly known as a center for heli-skiing, a sport that employs helicopters to deposit expert skiers high on mountain ridges, far from lifts and ski areas.

Biking

The mountains around Revelstoke are etched with old logging roads that have been converted into mountain-bike trails; ask at the visitor center for a map.

Skiing

Revelstoke Mountain Resort (6km/3 3/4 miles southeast of Revelstoke; tel. 866/922-8754 or 250/814-0087; www.revelstokemountainresort.com) is a new billion-dollar four-season resort that includes 21 lifts, 110 ski trails, 5,000 housing units, a pedestrian village, and an 18-hole golf course. An eight-person gondola and high-speed quads access the five bowls, terrain park, natural and man-made glades, and vast backcountry terrain that counts a whopping 208,413 hectares (515,000 acres). Located in the legendary Monashee and Selkirk Mountains along the Columbia River, the resort also differentiates itself by providing downhill, cat skiing, and heli-skiing all from the same base. Lift tickets are C$74 adults, C$57 seniors and children ages 13 to 18, and C$26 children 6 to 12.

Also now based out of the resort, the long-established Selkirk Tangiers Heli-Skiing (tel. 800/663-7080; www.selkirk-tangiers.com) offers helicopter-assisted skiing and snowboarding trips to more than 200 approved areas in the Monashee and Selkirk mountains, with some runs up to 2,195m (7,201 ft.) in length. A 4-day package, with access to 13,000 vertical meters (42,651 vertical ft.) of powder, accommodations, and meals starts at C$3,820.
