A. R. Mitchell Memorial Museum of Western Art

The Old West is alive and well here, at least on canvas and photographic paper. More than 350 paintings and illustrations by Western artist Arthur Roy Mitchell (1889-1977) are displayed, along with works by other nationally recognized artists and a collection of early Hispanic folk art, including bultos, retablos, and tinwork, plus Penitente artifacts. The museum also contains a historic collection of photographs taken by Oliver E. Aultman, Benjamin Wittick, and Almerod Newman from the late 1800s through much of the 20th century, as well as early cameras, darkroom equipment, and studio props. The museum gift shop sells a wide variety of jewelry, pottery, prints, and some original works of art, at fairly reasonable prices. The huge building, originally a department store, is a 1906 Western-style structure with the original pressed-tin ceiling, wood floors, and a horseshoe-shaped mezzanine. Allow 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
