Dining out on Stewart Island barely warrants a separate section. Church Hill Café & Restaurant, 36 Kamahi Rd. (tel. 03/219-1323; www.churchhillrestaurant.com), beside the Presbyterian Manse on the hill overlooking Oban, is not quite as consistent as we might like, but overall you'll probably get your best island meal here, especially seafood dishes. It's open daily 10am to late. The cheaper Wharfside Cafe, upstairs at the wharf (tel. 03/219-1470), is nothing fancy, but you'll be right in the island fishing atmosphere and you get good sea views. I always find it a good spot to relax while you wait for ferries or boat cruises. It's open from 10am until late, or from 7am for breakfast during the summer months. The seasonal KaiKart Takeaways is a mobile caravan on Ayr Street, beside the museum and school (tel. 03/219-1225; www.kaikartstewartisland.com). It's open daily from noon to 2pm and 5pm until late during summer, providing excellent-value fish and chips, hamburgers, and assorted takeaways. Their blue cod snacks are definitely worth trying. Look out for Bean Around Mobile Espresso (tel. 03/219-1234) for the best coffee. As the name suggests, they're mobile, so when you see them, grab that coffee! Just Café, 6 Main Rd., Oban (tel. 03/219-1422), is otherwise the best source of coffee. They serve delicious counter food and juices too, and they have an Internet service as well.
